The narrator introduces himself as a man who had learned in childhood that adults lack imagination and understanding. He is now a pilot who crashed in the desert. He meets a little boy who asks him for a picture of a sheep and the narrator is bound. The storyteller, who calls the boy a little prince, learns that the boy came from a very small planet, which the narrator considers to be the asteroid B-612. Over the next few days, the little prince tells the storyteller about his life.

However, the geographer knows nothing about his planet, as his only job is to record what he learns from the explorers. He asks the prince to describe his main planet, but when the prince mentions flowers, geographers say that they are not recorded because the flowers are fictional. The geographer suggests that the little prince will visit Earth.
On earth finds a prince snake, who says he can bring him back to his home, and a flower, which tells him that people lack roots. He came to the rose garden, and as he claimed, he was very disappointed to hear that his beloved rose was not unique in the universe. Little Prince desperately creates flattering portraits of narrow-minded adults. Children, on the other hand, acquire knowledge with a free mind and a desire to know the world around them. The main theme of the fable is expressed in the mystery that the fox told the prince: "What is right is seen only by the heart: what is necessary is invisible to the eye."

French- and English-language editions of the novel were published in 1943 (the book did not appear in France until 1946). Critics weren't sure what to make of The Little Prince, and it didn't immediately become popular. Couldn't figure out if the book was for kids or adults, yet British author P.L. Travers said it contained the necessary material for the children's book "It is true even in the inner sense, it gives no explanation and there is morality in it."

The character and events of The Little Prince, who wrote the book while fleeing the chaos of World War II in France while in New York City, are similar to many critics in the life of its author. According to the narrator, Saint-Exupery was the pilot who experienced the plane crash in the desert (Libya). His wife, Consuelo, is also said to have been treated like the Prince of Rose – a parallel to Consuelo's later autobiography, The Tale of the Rose (written in 1945 and published in 2000). Thus, the narrator and the little prince themselves are seen as expressions of different aspects of Saint-Exupery.
